Licence

As a result of the Spanish Gambling Act, operators providing betting services to citizens of Spain must obtain a license from the country’s National Gambling Commission. Licenses are not transferable and their grant implies payment of taxes, including some back dated to before the Act came into existence. Spanish online gambling licenses will be available soon as the gaming authority published a draft of the tender rules on its website. As anticipated in a previous blog post from my Spanish colleague Paula Gonzalez, the upcoming tender for new online gambling licenses is now confirmed as the DGOJ, the Spanish online gambling authority, published in its website the draft call for tender.

In order to grow the ring-fenced Spanish industry, regulator La Dirección General de Ordenación del Juego (DGOJ) has recently decided to reopen the licensing window.

According to eGaming Review, 12 operators have applied for 20 general licences, including nine for sports betting and 11 for casino games. It is reported that another 32 applications were filed for specific products, including the country's newly regulated slots and table games.

Spain hopes that with the introduction of new operators and new games, the market can continue to grow off the heals of the growth announced by the DGOJ itself in the most recent quarter.

Spanish Gambling Licence Application

While all 12 gaming operators to apply for new Spanish online gaming licenses have yet to be disclosed, we do know a few of the companies who have applied to offer gaming services and products to the country's residents. Gala Coral-branded Eurobet was the first gaming company to announce its intentions to reenter the Spanish marketplace after exiting in 2011 when Spanish regulation was passed. Eurobet sportsbook director Carlo Di Maio recently disclosed to eGaming Review the company's excitement. Di Maio said, 'We have taken advantage of the October to December window offered to operators and we believe the Spanish market has great potential by having a large audience and clear regulation in place prone on the introduction of new products such as slots.'

It is also speculated that Betclic-Everest Group, NetEnt, SKS365, BetCris, Recreativos Franco, and Gauselmann are part of the group of 12 gaming operators to apply for a Spanish gaming license.
